Empowering California's Housing Heroes
The Small Builders Association (SBA) is a dynamic, member-led nonprofit organization founded to champion the often-overlooked backbone of California's housing market—small builders, contractors, and vendors. Headquartered in the Bay Area and expanding statewide, we're building more than just structures; we're constructing a movement that levels the playing field in an industry traditionally dominated by large corporations.
Our Story
What started as successful PropTech & Real Estate Trends Conferences (PRET) and Builder Mixer events—bringing together over 2,000 builders, developers, tech innovators, and civic leaders—has evolved into something more lasting and impactful. In 2025, we transformed that incredible energy into the Small Builders Association, creating a year-round platform for deeper connections, real-time resources, and ongoing support.
Who We Are
Small Builders - Independent contractors and small-scale developers building 1-50 units annually
Vendors & Suppliers - Local businesses providing materials, services, and specialized expertise
Construction Professionals - Architects, engineers, project managers, and skilled tradespeople
Industry Partners - Financial institutions, technology providers, and service companies
Civic Leaders - Government officials, housing advocates, and community stakeholders
Our Mission
SBA's mission is to equip small builders, contractors, and vendors with the tools, representation, and opportunities they need to thrive in California's construction industry. We focus on creating an inclusive, connected, and thriving construction ecosystem that uplifts every builder, regardless of size.
Our Purpose
We exist to connect and uplift the small builders who are essential to solving California's housing crisis. By providing equal access, visibility, and influence, we help level the playing field and ensure that small builders can compete, grow, and contribute meaningfully to our state's housing future.
What Makes Us Different
Data-Driven Approach
We provide members with real-time market data, track records, and industry insights that were previously available only to large builders.
Statewide Network
While rooted in the Bay Area, our expanding network connects builders across California, creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Policy Advocacy
We amplify the collective voice of small builders in public policy discussions, ensuring their perspectives are heard in housing legislation and regulation.
Strategic Partnerships
Through carefully vetted partnerships, we provide access to capital, resources, and opportunities that help small builders compete effectively.
Our Impact Goals
Level the Playing Field - Provide small builders with the same access to data, education, and resources available to large developers
Amplify Voices - Ensure small builders have meaningful representation in both public and private sector discussions
Drive Innovation - Foster collaboration between builders, vendors, tech companies, and civic leaders to create scalable housing solutions
Remove Barriers - Advocate for policy changes that unlock opportunities and streamline processes for small builders
Build Community - Create lasting connections and support networks that help members grow their businesses
Why California Needs Small Builders
Small builders are uniquely positioned to address California's housing challenges:

  • Flexibility - Ability to work on infill projects and unique sites that large builders often overlook

  • Community Focus - Deep understanding of local needs and neighborhood dynamics

  • Innovation - Willingness to experiment with new materials, methods, and designs

  • Efficiency - Streamlined operations that can respond quickly to market opportunities

  • Economic Impact - Support local suppliers, subcontractors, and community businesses

Join Our Movement
The Small Builders Association isn't just another trade organization—we're a community of innovators, problem-solvers, and housing heroes working together to reshape California's construction landscape. Whether you're building your first project or your hundredth, whether you're supplying materials or providing services, there's a place for you in our growing network.
Together, we're not just building homes; we're building a stronger, more equitable future for California's housing market.
